At The Original Mattress Factory, our mission is to make sure you find the right mattress for you. That’s why we always encourage mattress shoppers to start their journey here. Whether you purchase from us or not, we’ll make sure you’re better prepared to make a smart buying decision.

When you’re ready to start mattress shopping, there are a lot of different considerations you should keep in mind when you’re researching and visiting retailers.

Support

Getting adequate support from your mattress is vital to healthy sleep. How will you know if a mattress is able to provide good support? You’ll have to find out what materials are used to build it because support comes from the core of the mattress.

We don’t recommend mattresses that utilize air or water because we don’t believe they can provide the best support. Both foam and innerspring mattresses can provide adequate support, but you need to know what to look for.

When it comes to a foam mattress, it’s important to look for one with a high-density foam core. We don’t recommend pocketed coils for innerspring mattresses. Instead, look for a high-quality interlaced innerspring.

It’s also important to understand that a supportive mattress doesn’t have to be hard. Since the support comes from the core, you can add upholstery layers to make it as soft or firm as you’d like.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort, it’s important to remember that comfort preferences are unique to everyone. There is no one-size-fits-all mattress. So how can you find the mattress that is most comfortable for you?

It’s all about taking your time and testing the mattresses out in person.  We encourage our customers to try out a mattress in their natural sleeping position for at least 15 minutes.

The types and amount of materials used, the order of the layers, and the construction of the mattress will all impact the feel.

Durability

When you’re purchasing a new mattress, you want to find one that will provide you with a good night’s sleep for years to come. But today’s mattresses aren’t lasting nearly as long as they used to because many mattress manufacturers are cutting back on quality. If it’s been a while since you’ve last shopped for a mattress, you’ll likely find that very few are “making them like they used to.”

The construction of the mattress and the quality of the materials used will have a big impact on the durability of a mattress. That’s why we still make two-sided, flippable mattresses that use only supportive innerspring systems, cotton padding, and real, shock-absorbing box springs. We believe that building a durable mattress is in the best interest of you: our customers.

Your box spring can also have a huge impact on your mattress' durability. A real flexing box spring acts as a shock absorber for the mattress. A foundation, which is most commonly found from mainstream mattress brands, doesn't offer any real benefits to your mattress. Learn more about box springs vs. foundations here.

Price

You can always find mattresses at bargain-basement prices, but they likely won’t provide enough support, durability, or comfort to provide a good night’s sleep. We believe you deserve the best-quality mattress you can afford.

But that doesn’t mean that the most expensive mattress is the best mattress for you.

Mattress sizes

Getting the right size mattress and box spring is vital to your comfort. You (and your partner, if you share your bed) need to have room to stretch out. Mattress sizes are standardized throughout the industry. Check out our guide to mattress sizes here.

At OMF, we can also hand build custom-size mattresses in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Whether you need an uncommon size or a unique shape for your RV, boat, antique bed, or more, OMF is here to help.

It's also important to keep height in mind. Make sure that the thickness of the mattress in combination with the box spring and frame don't make your bed too high for you to get in and out of comfortably. You may want to consider a low-profile box spring or a bunk board to lower the overall height.

Navigating the mattress industry

Now that you know what to look for in your new mattress, it’s almost time to go shopping. But it’s important to prepare yourself because the mattress industry has tried to make mattress shopping as confusing as possible on purpose.

First, read up on the five ways the mattress industry tries to confuse customers.

Then, you’ll want to find out why you can’t always trust mattress reviews. Many shoppers turn to review sites to research a big purchase. Unfortunately, most mattress review sites are rattled with conflicts of interest, so it’s hard to know whether or not you can trust their recommendations.

Ready to go to the stores? Be on the lookout for these three mattress features that don’t have any benefits. Mattress manufacturers and retailers love to advertise these features to justify adding hundreds of dollars to the price. There’s just one problem — there’s little-to-no evidence that they actually work.

When you’re ready to start your mattress shopping journey, we hope that you’ll stop by an Original Mattress Factory location. Check out three of the ways we’re different than other mattress companies.
