Why we still make two-sided, flippable mattresses

When our company opened in 1990, nearly all mattress manufacturers made two-sided, flippable mattresses. And for a good reason: you can flip and rotate a two-sided mattress regularly to ensure that it wears evenly across both surfaces, extending the comfort and durability of the mattress for years to come.

But over the last two decades, the mattress industry has undergone a transformation. We’ve watched as the mainstream brands have gone through mergers and acquisitions, cut quality in order to cut costs, and prioritized profits over what’s best for the customer. Over the years, most manufacturers simply stopped offering two-sided mattresses.

At The Original Mattress Factory, we never stopped making two-sided mattresses. We’re one of only a few manufacturers who still make them, so we wanted to share why.

Don’t believe the hype

When the mainstream brands stopped offering two-sided mattresses, they had to come up with a reason in order to sell it to the customers. After all, why would you want to buy half the mattress for twice the price?

Well, that’s where the marketing department stepped in. These manufacturers branded these new one-sided mattresses as “no-flip” mattresses. They told customers that two-sided mattresses were old fashioned, and today’s technology meant that you no longer needed to flip your mattress.

But you only need to look at the average life of a mattress to see right through those claims. Back in the 1990s, mattresses could be expected to last 15 to 20 years. Now, the mattress industry says you can expect your mattress to last five to seven years. If the “no-flip” mattresses were such an advancement, you’d think you could expect them to last at least as long as a two-sided mattress, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Here at OMF, we don’t believe in these marketing gimmicks. We’d rather just offer a high-quality product.

Two-sided, flippable mattresses offer better durability and comfort

The fact of the matter is two-sided mattresses are just better. Flipping and rotating a mattress regularly (we recommend every three months) minimizes body impressions. (Register for our free flip reminder email here.)

And, of course, all of that means your mattress can last a lot longer. Sure, our customers don’t come back every five years, but we think that’s a good thing. We want our mattresses to provide you with restful, restorative sleep for years to come.

Here at OMF, we don’t add features without benefits. We stick with what works. And we know that two-sided mattresses work.

We’re employee owned

Why does that matter? We build mattresses with our customer in mind. We each take special pride and care in our jobs, whether it’s in the factory, on the sales floor, or on the delivery team, because we’re all owners.

We’re not owned by a private equity firm. We’re not beholden to stockholders. Our employees are our only stockholders. So, it’s not about profits, it’s about pride. Here at OMF, it’s about building the best product for you, our customers and providing the best service possible. That’s a pretty rare thing in business these days.
