What to do if your new mattress initially feels different than it did in the showroom

Mattress feels different

While uncommon, people who recently bought a mattress occasionally have concerns that their new mattress feels different than the model they tested on the showroom floor. Some people mistakenly believe that the mattresses on a showroom floor are “broken in.” However, these mattresses are only laid on for a combined total of a few minutes each day, and they’re typically replaced frequently.

At The Original Mattress Factory, we can assure you that the mattresses on our sales floor are built identically to any you would receive from us. We take quality very seriously at every step of the manufacturing process.

Always take your time when testing out a mattress

The best way to prevent this issue is to take as much time as possible testing out your mattress. When you lay on a mattress for only a few minutes, you may not be giving your body enough time to sense the support at the core of the mattress.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, we always recommend that you spend at least 15 minutes testing your top choices in your natural sleeping position. Hang out as long as you’d like. Take a nap. Come back five times to test them out. We want you to take as much time as you need to ensure you make the right decision for your sleeping needs.

Give your body time to adjust to a new mattress

It’s really important to give your body time to get used to a new mattress. It’s likely that you had your last mattress for years which means your body got used to a certain type of support and comfort, even as your mattress aged. Your first few nights on a new mattress — especially one with good, high-quality support — might not feel as great as you were expecting.

The mattress industry advises you to give yourself at least 30 nights on a new mattress to give your body time to adjust.

What to do if you selected the wrong mattress for you

While rare, it’s possible that you may find that the mattress you selected is not the right mattress for you, even after giving it plenty of time. It doesn’t mean that the mattress itself is built incorrectly or of poor quality, but it may not offer the right support or comfort to meet your needs. The good news is that you have options.

If you find that it turns out to not be the right mattress for you, we offer our 365-Day Comfort Policy. This policy lasts for the first year after you receive your new mattress, so there’s no need to rush your decision.
