The disposable mattress habit
Many younger shoppers now treat a mattress as something to use up and replace. In an August 2026 Bedding News Now survey of 1,000 shoppers ages 18 to 29, one in four said they plan to keep their mattress only 1 to 2 years, and 40% said 3 to 4 years. Most plan to trade up to a better mattress in one to five years, once their finances improve.
The budget pressure behind that plan is real. But waiting to trade up assumes a quality mattress costs far more than a disposable one. Often it does not.
Do the math: quality can cost less per year
A two-sided mattress built for nightly adult use can cost less per year than a disposable one, even at a higher price tag. Industry sources estimate the typical online marketplace mattress sells for $200 to $300, according to Bedding News Now. The Original Mattress Factory's Oasis mattress is $379 in a queen.

The industry commonly suggests replacing a mattress every 5 to 7 years, and how long any mattress lasts depends on materials, construction, body weight, and care. A two-sided mattress that you flip and rotate spreads wear across both sides, which helps it stay comfortable longer. Prices are mattress only, as of October 2026.
The bigger difference is not in the table. The disposable plan means buying, hauling away, and adjusting to a new mattress every few years, while sleeping on a worn-out one in between.
The cost you don't see: your sleep
A mattress that wears out early costs you sleep before it costs you a replacement. Thin foams and light coil systems often fail to provide adequate support, can soften, sag, or develop body impressions within the first year or two. Most people keep sleeping on them anyway until the next purchase.
That gap is where the real price gets paid:
- Support. A mattress that sags lets the hips and shoulders sink out of alignment, which can lead to morning back and neck stiffness.
- Sleep quality. Pressure points and a sinking surface cause more tossing and turning and lighter sleep.
- Daytime effects. Poor sleep shows up in energy, focus, and mood the next day.
A cheaper mattress trades a lower price for fewer good nights. Spread across years, that is a steep trade.
What to look for when you're on a budget
You do not need the most expensive mattress. You need one built to hold up. Check these before you buy:
- Is it built to support an adult every night? Some low-cost mattresses are made for guest rooms, kids, or occasional use. Ask what the mattress is designed for.
- Can it be flipped? A two-sided mattress is padded on both sides and shares the wear between them. A one-sided mattress wears on one surface only.
- What is inside? Look for specifics: coil count, coil gauge (a lower number means thicker, stronger wire), and foam certifications such as CertiPUR-US. Vague descriptions make durability hard to judge.
- What is it sitting on? A working box spring absorbs shock and helps a mattress last. A worn or flat foundation shortens its life.
- What is the fire barrier made of? Some budget mattresses use fiberglass. Ask before you buy.
- Can you try it? Ten minutes lying on a mattress in your usual sleep position tells you more than reviews from people with different bodies and preferences.
- Where is it made? A lot of low cost mattresses you find on line come from overseas. Everything you buy from the Original Mattress Factory is made right here in town. No wondering about what is inside.
- Don't shop by warranty length alone. A warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover the gradual loss of comfort and support, so it is not a promise of how long a mattress will feel good.
You don't have to wait to trade up
The same survey found that a mattress is the No. 1 item young shoppers plan to upgrade. At The Original Mattress Factory, that upgrade is already within reach, because every mattress we make, including our least expensive, is built to support an adult.
Our entry-level Oasis line shows what that means at a budget price:
- Two-sided design you can flip and rotate to extend its comfort life
- Adult-level support from a 312-coil (full size), 13-gauge Bonnell innerspring with a 6-gauge border rod
- CertiPUR-US certified foam and cotton padding
- 10-year warranty, with every OMF mattress carrying a 10 to 12 year warranty
- Made in our own factories and sold in our own stores
We can price it this way because we are direct to consumer. We build the mattress and sell it to you, with no wholesaler or outside retailer adding a markup in between. That is how we eliminate the middleman: better materials at a lower price.
You can try the Oasis line, and the rest of our mattresses, in person at an Original Mattress Factory store before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cheap mattress worth it? A low-cost mattress can work for a guest room or short-term use. For nightly adult use, a mattress that wears out in a year or two usually costs more per year than a durable one and gives you fewer good nights along the way.
How long should a mattress last? The industry commonly suggests replacing a mattress every 5 to 7 years. The actual life depends on materials, one-sided or two-sided construction, body weight, sleep habits, and the foundation underneath it. A well-made mattress can last considerably longer.
How do I figure out the real cost of a mattress? Divide the price by the years you expect to use it. A $250 mattress replaced after two years costs $125 per year. A $379 Oasis queen mattress used for seven years costs about $54 per year.
What is the best affordable mattress for a first apartment? Choose a mattress built for nightly adult use, ideally two-sided, with clear information about its coils and foams. Try it in person if you can.
Is it better to buy a mattress online or in a store? Online shopping is convenient, but you cannot feel a mattress before it arrives. Lying on it in your usual sleep position is the most reliable way to know whether it fits you.
Can a worn-out mattress affect my health? A mattress that sags or loses support can contribute to poor sleep and morning back or neck stiffness. Consistent support matters more than any single feature.
Why is a factory-direct mattress less expensive? A factory-direct company builds and sells its own mattresses, so there is no wholesaler or outside retailer adding a markup. The savings can go into better materials instead.
