When you’re shopping for a mattress, you’ll find that many manufacturers and retailers advertise a warranty on their products. And that’s a good thing — this is a large purchase, so you want to make sure you’re protected.
But there are a lot of misconceptions around what a warranty actually means for your mattress purchase. We want to clarify what a mattress warranty is and isn’t so that you can be better prepared when you go mattress shopping.
A mattress warranty covers any defects in the materials used to build your mattress or errors in workmanship when building your mattress. For example, if a wire from the innerspring comes loose or the handles of your mattress pull out, our warranty would cover those repairs. If the mattress was damaged during delivery or a wood rail in your box spring breaks, those issues would be covered, too. Depending on the type and severity of the issue, the manufacturer may choose to repair or replace the mattress.
A mattress warranty covers some body impressions. Body impressions are normal. They are to be expected with today’s more heavily upholstered mattresses. Even in a new mattress, you may see a slight body impression early on while the materials settle. But very deep body impressions could signal that there is a problem with the materials. A mattress warranty doesn’t cover comfort. Comfort is unique to everyone. You may have selected a mattress that didn’t turn out to be the right fit for you, but that doesn’t mean the mattress itself is defective. Take your time when testing out mattresses so that you can be sure you’ve selected the right one. A warranty isn’t an indication of how long your mattress will last. While most mattress warranties are 10 to 12 years, the mattress industry says you can expect your mattress to last five to seven years.
Your mattress warranty may not cover everything for the whole period of your mattress. If something goes wrong on year nine of your prorated 10-year warranty, the manufacturer may require you to pay a portion of the costs to have it repaired.
A mattress warranty won’t cover damage caused by improper support. Pairing your new mattress with a real working box spring and a heavy-duty frame with a center support will provide enough support to your mattress. But if you don’t have this support, your mattress can sag or even be damaged.
Warranties are important. A mattress manufacturer should stand by their product and make things right if there is an error or defect. But we don’t believe that a mattress warranty should be the make-it-or-break-it factor when deciding on which mattress to buy. Focus on finding a high-quality mattress you love from a company you can trust.
Thankfully, in our experience, genuine warranty-related issues are rare. Our mattresses are inspected for quality at every step of the manufacturing process, so it’s unusual if a damaged mattress makes it out the door.
