In order to get a good night’s sleep consistently, it’s important to create an environment that allows your body and mind to relax and wind down at the end of a long, busy day. We’re sharing our tips for creating a bedroom that is ideal for restful, restorative sleep.
“Sleeping hot” is a common issue. A lot of mattress companies will tell you their mattresses are specially designed with gel-infused foams to keep you cool. Just one problem: these foams haven’t been proven to do what they claim. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck if you struggle with overheating at night.
The first step is keeping your bedroom at a cool temperature at night. The Cleveland Clinic recommends keeping your bedroom between 60-67 degrees. A fan can help with air circulation.
Next, choose light and breathable bedding and sleepwear. You’ll want to feel cozy, but the materials should be light enough to allow for air flow.
During your bedtime routine, turn off any bright lights including any screens. Devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and TVs give off blue light. Harvard Medical School says that nighttime exposure to blue light can have a negative impact on your sleep. Reading, journaling, or chatting with your partner can be a better way to wind down at the end of the day.
Street lights or an early-rising sun can also bring disruptive light into our bedrooms. Opt for blackout curtains on your windows or use a sleep mask to help keep it as dark as possible in your room.
Your bedroom should be quiet by bedtime. You can drown out some disruptive noises with a constant, calming noise, like white noise (or pink, brown, or black noise). You can get white noise with the help of a noise machine. There are also free apps that offer a variety of calming sounds, such as waves, rain, or crackling fires. Even a fan can help drown out disruptive noises.
And, of course, in order to get a good night’s sleep, you’ll need a comfortable, supportive mattress.
