How to build healthy sleep habits

healthy sleep habits

A good night’s sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle, and getting a good night’s sleep consistently starts with healthy sleep habits. These habits are known as sleep hygiene. Just like your physical hygiene habits keep your body clean, healthy, and happy, your sleep hygiene habits make it easier for you to fall asleep and get a full night’s rest.

We’re sharing our top tips for building healthy sleep habits.

Make sleep a priority.

Between work, school, raising your family, and social commitments, your days are jam packed. To get everything on your to-do list checked off, it may eat into the time you’d normally devote to rest. But the truth is that getting adequate sleep each night needs to be a priority. Without it, you may struggle to keep up with your busy schedule.

Stick to a schedule.

Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning can help regulate your body’s internal clock. This can be difficult to stick to on weekends or your days off when you may be tempted to stay up late or sleep in. But the Mayo Clinic says you shouldn’t vary your sleep schedule by more than an hour.

Create a relaxing bedtime routine.

At the end of a long day, it’s important to allow your body and mind to wind down with a relaxing bedtime routine. It’s tempting to lay in bed and scroll through social media on your phone, but this may not be the best way to spend your bedtime routine. First, blue light from our digital devices can disrupt our ability to fall asleep. And, of course, you may find what you see and read on your social media feeds isn’t the most relaxing content to consume just before bed. Put your phone away when you start your bedtime routine and opt for reading a good book or journaling instead.

Select a high-quality mattress.

Your bedroom environment and mattress play a big role in how well you sleep every night. Your bedroom should be a calm, quiet place where you can unwind at the end of a long day and get some rest. A mattress should provide the comfort and support you need to get restful, restorative sleep and wake up each morning refreshed. If your mattress is keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep, the team at The Original Mattress Factory is here to help.
